Sylhet Police have sealed off four hotels following allegations of immoral activities, as part of a week-long crackdown across the city.
According to a press release issued by Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) on Friday, a total of 12 men and women were detained from the hotels during the operation. Police claimed the arrests were made based on allegations of involvement in indecent activities.
The hotels that have been shut down include Sylhet Rest House, Bilash Residential Hotel, Grand Sawda Hotel, and Al Sadi Hotel, the SMP said in its statement.
During the week-long anti-crime drives, police also seized various contraband items -among them 250 yaba tablets, 587 bottles of imported liquor, 200 grams of cannabis, and 102 litres of locally brewed alcohol.
In separate raids across the city, officers recovered a significant amount of smuggled goods, including 2,071 Indian sarees, 31 packets of Indian chocolates, 1,600 pieces of skincare cream, 168,000 Indian bidis, and 770 packs of foreign-brand cigarettes.
Throughout the week, more than 200 suspects were arrested from different neighbourhoods in Sylhet. The detainees include 16 drug peddlers, 10 listed muggers, and 24 known thieves, according to police sources.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) and Media Wing Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed the details of the operation, saying the drives will continue to curb criminal and unethical activities in the city.
