Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the stabbing of Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Osman Gani in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.
The arrestees have been identified as Sharif Uddin Babu, Najmul Hasan, Md Imon, and Md Jewel. Jewel Rana, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Mohammadpur Zone, confirmed the matter on Sunday afternoon, stating that the suspects are currently in police custody.
SI Osman Gani, who is currently posted at the immigration branch of the Special Branch (SB) at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, was attacked on Thursday night.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30pm on Road 4, Block C of Kaderabad Housing while he was returning home after shopping with his wife, Tanjina Sima, and their only child.
According to police sources, an assailant stabbed the officer in the back from behind and fled the scene. Despite his injuries, SI Gani attempted to apprehend the attacker but was unsuccessful. He subsequently filed a case as the plaintiff at Mohammadpur Police Station.
The officer sustained serious injuries and required 45 stitches on his back. He initially received treatment at a local clinic before being moved to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and later to the Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital.
While a specific motive has yet to be confirmed, Abdullah Al Mamun, the Assistant Commissioner of the Mohammadpur-Adabar Zone (Tejgaon Division), stated that the attack does not appear to be a mugging.
He suggested the incident may have been triggered by prior enmity, adding that the primary cause will be clarified once the suspects are interrogated.
Police noted that CCTV footage from the area shows three youths speaking with SI Gani before the attack and subsequently fleeing the site.
