A Dhaka court has sent Ahmed Zobayer, former managing director of Somoy Television, to jail in a case of bank fraud and breach of trust filed at Kalabagan Police Station.
Metropolitan Magistrate Raju Ahmed passed the order on Thursday after Zobayer and five others failed to appear in court despite a summons to explain the allegations.
On Wednesday, the court had ordered Ahmed Zobayer, along with his family members and two witnesses – six people in total – to appear and explain the allegations. They were given the option to appear in person or through lawyers.
However, they failed to appear at the scheduled time, ignoring the court’s directive. The magistrate then ordered them to be sent to jail.
Earlier on Wednesday, Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman had ordered the issuance of an arrest warrant against Zobayer after he failed to comply with earlier court procedures.
According to case documents, summons were issued on 10 May for Zobayer and the six others to appear in court and explain the allegations in the case.
The case was filed at Kalabagan Police Station over bank fraud and breach of trust, according to court sources. Further legal proceedings are ongoing.
