Five people were injured in a gun attack by rivals in Raozan upazila of Chattogram late Wednesday night. The shooting took place around 11:45 pm at Chowdhury Para in Koepura village under Ward 7 of Bagowan Union.
The injured were identified as Raozan Upazila unit Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal General Secretary Abdullah Sumon, Bagowan Union unit Krishak Dal Vice President Mohammad Ismail, Bagowan Union unit Sramik Dal Joint Convener Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, Bagowan Union unit Jubo Dal Vice President Robiul Hossain Rubel, and BNP activist Mohammad Sohel.
Doctors said Suman was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition.
Raozan BNP President Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said the attack occurred suddenly as they were returning home after attending a meeting marking the 7November Revolution and Solidarity Day. He alleged that the assailants were led by upazila Jubo Dal general secretary Istiaq Chowdhury.
Locals said the attackers fled in a car after firing shots. The injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). All five are known followers of BNP leader Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Raozan-Rangunia Circle) Belayet Hossain said police were deployed to the area and an investigation is underway.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, BNP’s Chattogram-8 candidate and city convener Ershad Ullah was shot during a campaign in Hamzarbagh under Panchlaish police station. His associate, Sarwar Babla, was killed in that attack.
