The body of expatriate worker Girish Chandra Sutradhar, who was killed in Bahrain, was handed over to his family on Wednesday.
His body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8:30am on an Emirates Airlines flight.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir received the body at the airport and formally handed it over to the victim’s younger brother, Samar Chandra Sutradhar. Senior officials from the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment were also present.
The government is giving top priority to the welfare of Bangladeshis abroad, the minister said. He also announced Tk35,000 in immediate assistance for funeral arrangements and pledged Tk300,000 more for the family upon submission of inheritance documents.
Muqtadir urged all outbound workers to register with the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) to ensure inclusion in the government’s official list, which would allow them to receive prompt support when needed.
He prayed for the wellbeing of all expatriates and sought eternal peace for Girish Chandra’s soul.
Girish Chandra, a resident of Purbo Machpara in Sylhet Sadar upazila, was killed recently in Bahrain after being struck by missile debris linked to the ongoing Middle East war.
