The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has sentenced five years imprisonment to former inspector general Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun in a crimes against humanity case.
A three-member bench of the ICT-1 handed down the sentence to Mamun considering his contributions to the case as the state witness.
The tribunal noted in its verdict observations that the convict had fully disclosed the circumstances within his knowledge regarding the crime.
Mamun, the third accused in the case, was spared the death penalty and sentenced to five years in jail after becoming a state witness.

However, Mamun is the first defendant to do so since the tribunal was established in 2010.
The tribunal also sentenced deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death in the case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.

Also, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was handed down death penalty in the case.
Earlier in the day, Mamun was brought before the tribunal in the morning. Later around 12:30pm, the ICT-1 began reading out the verdict.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the tribunal and in surrounding areas ahead of the verdict. Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and army personnel have been deployed in front of the tribunal.
