Former Election Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mubarak has passed away at the age of 78.
He passed away on Monday while receiving treatment for throat cancer at Apollo Imperial Hospital in Chittagong, according to family sources. His sister-in-law, Laiju, confirmed that he will be laid to rest in his birthplace of Hathazari, Chittagong.
The first funeral prayer took place in the afternoon at the Omargani MES College grounds in Chattogram. Abdul Mubarak served as Senior Election Commissioner under the Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed-led Election Commission, which supervised the controversial 10th national elections on January 5, 2014. During this election, 153 candidates were elected unopposed following an opposition boycott.
