Detectives have detained former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Abdul Jalil Mondal from the capital’s Dhanmondi area.
Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB), confirmed that the former top official was apprehended on Monday evening. The detention took place shortly after Mondal arrived in Dhaka from Pabna and entered his residence.
According to DB officials, the action was taken based on an arrest warrant issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). Nasirul Islam added that authorities are currently verifying whether there are other pending cases against him.
It is further reported that he will be shown arrested in a case related to the Shapla Chattar incident. The former DIG also faces a murder case filed in connection with the anti-discrimination movement following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August.
A native of Pabna district, Abdul Jalil Mondal is a valiant freedom fighter (Bir Muktijoddha).
During his distinguished career in the police force, he served as the Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) and as an Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He later held the significant position of Additional Director General (ADG, Administration) of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Earlier in his service, he also performed duties as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in the districts of Nilphamari, Bagerhat, and Joypurhat.
