Former Desh TV managing director Arif Hasan has been shown arrested in driver Babul murder case filed with Dhaka’s Airport Police Station.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order on Thursday following a petition filed by Md Abu Sayeed, investigation officer of the case and sub-inspector of Airport Police Station.
Court sources said Arif Hasan is already under arrest in several other cases.
State counsel Harun‑ur‑Rashid argued in favour of the arrest, while defence lawyer Tahmina Sultana opposed it, telling the court that the accused is a reputed businessman with no political links, facing nine cases.
She questioned how he could physically carry out attacks in multiple places on the same day.
According to the case statement, during the anti‑discrimination student movement in July–August 2024, attacks were carried out on students and protesters.
On 18 July, driver Babul was critically injured by gunfire from assailants in the capital’s Uttara. He later died while under treatment at Uttara Women’s Medical College Hospital. His wife filed a murder case at Airport Police Station on 22 July last year.
In his petition, the investigation officer said accused Arif Hasan acted as the “main financier” of the killing and attacks, while his associates were present at the scene and actively involved in the violence.
