The High Court on Sunday granted bail to detained Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The High Court bench of Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order following a bail petition filed by Kalimulla.
Senior lawyers Md Fazlur Rahman, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Syed Mamun Mahbub and Advocate Kazi Ahsan Habib appeared for the bail petitioner, while Advocate Khan Md Moinul Hasan Lipon represented the ACC. On the other hand, lawyer Khan Md Moinul Hasan Lipon appeared for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), while Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal represented the State.
According to the case details, Professor Kalimullah was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on 6 August 2025 and later placed on a five-day remand.
He subsequently filed a bail petition with the High Court after his plea was rejected by the Metropolitan Special Judge’s Court on 4 September.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on 6 June last year against five individuals, including Professor Kalimullah and former BRUR Vice Chancellor Professor AKM Nur-un-Nabi.
The charges relate to alleged irregularities and the embezzlement of nearly Tk 4 crore in a university development project, including the construction of Sheikh Hasina Hall and the Dr Wazed Miah Research and Training Institute building.
Professor Kalimullah served as Vice Chancellor of BRUR from 2017 to 2021, while his predecessor, Professor AKM Nur-un-Nabi, held the post from 2013 to 2017.
