European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller held a meeting with Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanowullah on Monday to discuss preparations for the upcoming national election.

The meeting, which lasted for about an hour and a half, was also attended by the EC secretary.  The EU envoy did not speak to the media after the meeting.

Speaking to TIMES of Bangladesh, the EC secretary said, “The European Union wanted to know about Bangladesh’s electoral preparations. They plan to send observers for the upcoming national election. Before that, a pre-election assessment mission will visit the country.”

Earlier, on September 29, the EC held a meeting with a seven-member EU delegation. Following that discussion, the EC secretary stated that a full-fledged observation mission comprising around 150 members would arrive in phases after the announcement of the election schedule.

To facilitate the observation mission, a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed among the European Union, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Election Commission.

The EU team will monitor the entire electoral process from polling and counting to the publication of the official results.
