England finally ended their long-standing struggle against European opponents in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, defeating Scotland by five wickets at the iconic Eden Gardens. The victory keeps England’s World Cup hopes alive in Group C after a tense chase of 153.

At the toss, England captain Harry Brook opted to field, putting Scotland into bat. The Scots managed 152 from their 20 overs, with contributions from Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce keeping the innings competitive. However, the score proved just short on a pitch that slowed in the second half, with England spinners exploiting the conditions to take key wickets.

England’s chase was far from straightforward. At 13 for two and later 86 for four, Scotland sensed a possible upset, and the partisan Eden Gardens crowd roared in support of the underdogs, even applauding dot-balls. The turning point came with Tom Banton at the crease. After low scores in his first two innings of the tournament, Banton displayed composure and timing, guiding England through the middle overs.

When Scotland left-arm spinner Mark Watt entered the attack, England still required 99 from 12 overs. Banton attacked decisively, stepping down the pitch to dispatch Watt for three successive sixes. His unbeaten 63 proved crucial in steadying the innings. Sam Curran provided important support at number six, ensuring that England reached their target with overs to spare.

This victory is significant historically. Prior to this, England had never beaten a European side in T20 World Cups, losing thrice and recording two no-results. Past defeats came against the Netherlands (2009, 2014) and Ireland (2022), with no-results versus Ireland (2010) and Scotland (2024) due to rain interruptions.
