A Manikganj court today granted a six-day remand for former lawmaker and singer Momtaz Begum in two separate cases. One case was over a murder in Singair and another relating to vandalism in Harirampur upazila.
Eggs were hurled at her when she was being taken to a prison van after the court proceedings. Manikganj’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Court-One Judge Mohammad Abdun Noor granted a four-day remand in the Singair upazila murder case around 10:30am.
Later, Judge Ivy Akhter of Chief Judicial Court-3 granted a two-day remand in the case filed over attack, assault, and vandalism in Harirampur Police Station area around 11:00am.
Earlier, Momtaz was brought to the court from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur around 8:30am for the hearing.
As she was taken to the court, BNP lawyers and activists staged a protest demanding her punishment. A scuffle broke out between the activists and police during the demonstration.
Following the remand hearings, eggs and shoes were hurled at Momtaz as she was being escorted to a prison van under tight security, eyewitnesses said.
Court Inspector Abul Khair said that in 2013, four people were killed in police firing during a procession supporting a hartal in the Gobindal area of Singair upazila. In connection with the incident, Md Majnu Molla of Gobindal village filed a murder case with Singair Police Station on October 25, 2024, naming Momtaz Begum as the third accused.
Another case was filed in Harirampur Police Station over charges of assault and vandalism. Harirampur upazila BNP Organising Secretary Md Delwar Hossain lodged the case on October 29.
