BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that attempts are being made to make people forget the Liberation War in 1971.
He said, “It seems as if we did nothing for the country. As if only the 2024 movement activists have done everything. We cannot forget 2024, and we can never forget the people who were killed in 1971 either.”
He made the remarks on Monday during an exchange meeting with freedom fighters and their children at the Thakurgaon District Muktijoddha Complex.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “In 1971, thousands of our innocent brothers were killed. Many fled the country and hid in India to escape the brutality. Our mothers and sisters were unjustly tortured and killed. If someone tries to make us forget those days, is it even possible to forget?”
He also claimed that a group of conspirators, in collusion with the Pakistani occupation forces, carried out such killings in a planned manner during the Liberation War.
Alleging that “attempts are being made to swallow the country,” the BNP leader said, “There are efforts to engulf the country. A group is doing this by exploiting religious sentiment. We must resist this. We must keep the spirit of the Liberation War unblemished.”
On the issue of elections, he said, “A quarter is plotting to delay the election. Sabotaging or postponing the election means national destruction. The country urgently needs an elected government now.”
Others present at the meeting included District Muktijoddha Unit Command Convener Nur Karim, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council Convener Nayeem Jahangir, Member Secretary Sadek Ahmed Khan, Thakurgaon District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin and former state minister and member of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council Alhaj Mansur Ali.
