The Editors’ Council has condemned the case filed against journalist Anis Alamgir and his arrest without any specific charges.
In a press release issued on Monday, the Editors’ Council stated that such behaviour evokes memories of state repression against journalists during past autocratic regimes.
The press release was signed by the organisation’s president, Nurul Kabir, and General Gecretary, Dewan Hanif Mahmud, on behalf of the Editors’ Council.
It further stated that such practices were also observed during the previous Awami League government’s tenure. At that time, false cases, harassment, and arbitrary arrests against journalists were regular occurrences. The current incident is a repetition of that regrettable reality, they said.
The Editors’ Council believes that if there are specific allegations against any journalist, they must be resolved through existing laws and due judicial process.
It is not acceptable in any way to summon someone to the DB office without charges, detain them there, or later show their arrest in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, the statement added.
In the press release, the Editors’ Council strongly condemned such behaviour by the government and demanded the withdrawal of all baseless cases against Anis Alamgir and other journalists.
