Election Commission (EC) has withdrawn the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the relevant police station and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) following the violent incident in Jhenaigati, Sherpur, which left one person dead.
EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the decision during a press briefing at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Thursday.
He described the incident as “highly condemnable” and said it violated the EC’s code of conduct for election campaigning.
“According to our code of conduct, candidates are expected to campaign in a peaceful environment and read out their manifestos in a friendly atmosphere. Unfortunately, such an incident occurred,” he said.
He added that, as an administrative measure, the EC has decided to withdraw the UNO and the OC involved in the case.
The clash in Jhenaigati on Wednesday left Rezaul Karim, secretary of Jamaat’s Sreebardi upazila unit in Sherpur, dead. Several others were also injured in the confrontation between BNP and Jamaat supporters.
The EC has introduced a new system for the election, marking the first time candidates from different parties are brought together on a single stage arranged by the returning officer for campaign purposes.
