The government is working relentlessly with the highest priority on transparency, good governance, public welfare, and fulfilling the expectations of the people, said Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) spokesperson Mahdi Amin during a press conference on Saturday.
Speaking at the “Karabi” hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, Mahdi Amin marked the completion of 150 days (five months) of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He observed that while five months is not a lengthy period in terms of time, for a democratic government, every day is a commitment to implementing pledges made to the people. He further noted that every moment is a test of performing responsibility and accountability, and every step is a new test of gaining public trust.
The spokesperson claimed that the government has achieved “multi-dimensional unprecedented success” during this period.
He identified five key dimensions of these achievements that have opened a new horizon in the country’s political history, including public trust and support, protecting the interests of all professions based on the election manifesto, and success in tackling short-term challenges.
Other dimensions included prioritising national sovereignty and the statesmanlike leadership of the Prime Minister, which have paved the way for a humanitarian, non-discriminatory, safe, merit-based, and self-reliant Bangladesh.
Since being elected by direct popular vote, the government has placed the highest priority on rebuilding democratic institutions and maintaining economic stability.
Mahdi Amin highlighted several key initiatives as firm signals of good governance, such as controlling the prices of essential commodities, restoring discipline in the financial sector, and retrieving laundered money.
He also mentioned ensuring corruption-free and cost-saving reviews of various projects, alongside the ongoing rehabilitation of recent flood victims and the reconstruction of the collapsed health and education sectors.
The government remains fully committed to building an inclusive and prosperous Bangladesh based on the successes achieved in this brief period.
Dr Mahdi Amin noted that BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman received a mandate from the people to restore a state structure that had collapsed under prolonged fascist rule, adding that the Prime Minister has reached the peak of public trust within a very short time.
At the start of his speech, Mahdi Amin paid tribute to the martyrs of the July movement, specifically mentioning Abu Sayeed in Rangpur, Wasim Akram in Chattogram, and Farhan in Dhaka.
He noted that their sacrifices, along with those of countless students and ordinary people, turned a peaceful movement into a mass uprising that toppled fascist forces.
He remarked that the current democratic government, led by the BNP – a party described as the greatest victim of enforced disappearances, murders, and human rights violations over the last 16 years – came to power through a free, fair, and neutral election that reflected the public will.
The government views it as a moral duty to keep the public informed of every initiative, reform, and challenge.
The press conference was organised by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing and moderated by Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony.
Other officials in attendance included Abu Abdullah M Saleh, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister; Atiqur Rahman Rumon, Additional Press Secretary; and SAM Mahfuzur Rahman, the Prime Minister’s Speech Writer.
The event was also attended by Deputy Press Secretaries Md Shujauddoula (Sujan Mahmud) and Shahadat Swadhin, as well as Assistant Press Secretaries K M Nazmul Haque, Gazi Shahriar Pamir, and Ashrofa Imdad.
