Teachers and students of Dhaka University’s Department of Music held a protest rally on Thursday, condemning the government’s decision to cancel recruitment provisions for music and physical education teachers in government primary schools.
They demanded immediate reinstatement of the posts.
The rally began at 11:30 am at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla with the singing of the national anthem.
More than a hundred teachers and students from various departments joined the gathering in solidarity.
Earlier, on 28 August, the government introduced two new teaching positions for music and physical education in the revised recruitment rules for primary schools.
Shortly after, several religion-based organisations protested the inclusion of music as a subject in primary education.
Under pressure from those groups, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education cancelled both positions on 2 November.
