Dhaka University authorities have issued a show-cause notice to the accused following the circulation of screenshots of “obscene” Facebook posts about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman.
The accused, Abdullah Al Mahmud, is a former Information Technology Secretary of Dhaka University Islami Chatrashibir and a student of Salimullah Muslim Hall.
The authorities have formed two three-member committees to investigate the incident. They have also urged students to refrain from wall writing inside university halls.
The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Provost Standing Committee chaired by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor ABM Obaidul Islam on Thursday night, according to a notice signed by Acting Director of Public Relations Farrukh Mahmud.
Earlier, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon and other activists submitted a written complaint against the Shibir leader to Salimullah Muslim Hall Provost Abdullah Al Mamun.
On Thursday, a screenshot featuring an AI-generated image in the name of Abdullah Al Mahmud circulated on Facebook. Mahmud was a candidate from the Shibir-backed Oikkoboddho Shikkharthi Jote panel in the 2025 Dhaka University Central Students’ Union elections.
The notice said the university administration has urged all parties to remain calm and restrained over the situation arising from allegations that a student of Salimullah Muslim Hall made an offensive post on Facebook.
The committee has already served a show-cause notice to the accused student, asking him to submit a written explanation within 24 hours.
According to the notice, a three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident, with Salimullah Muslim Hall Residential Teacher Md Anwar Hossain as convener, Residential Teacher Jawad Ibne Farid as member secretary, and Assistant Proctor Professor Md Musaddiq Khan as member. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 48 hours.
The notice also said that, to maintain the beauty and discipline of the halls, all students have been asked to refrain from wall writing and graffiti inside the halls.
The university administration urged all parties to exercise patience, saying the matter will be resolved through proper procedures. It also requested everyone not to take the law into their own hands and called for mutual respect and tolerance to maintain the academic environment.
In addition, a separate three-member committee, headed by Assistant Proctor Shantu Barua, has been formed to investigate the assault on journalists at Shahbagh Police Station. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.
Following the controversy over the alleged Facebook post about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman, Ducsu leaders AB Jubayer and Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad were assaulted inside Shahbagh Police Station on Thursday evening.
Several journalists were also attacked while collecting news at the scene.
