Authorities at Dhaka University (DU) have suspended three students for six months over their alleged involvement in harassing two men and two women at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) area late at night on 24 February.

The suspended students are Shahriar Islam Tushar from the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, Rakib Ahmed from the Department of World Religions and Culture, and Shahriar Tanzil from the Department of Anthropology.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on Tuesday.

Following the incident, the two male friends accompanying them submitted a written complaint to the university’s Proctor Office, seeking action against those involved.

Shahriar Tanzil, one of the suspended students, was also the joint convener of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP.

After CCTV footage of the harassment incident circulated on social media, the organisation expelled Tanzil for life from all its posts and primary membership on 28 February.

In a statement, the student organisation said the decision was taken after allegations of activities “contrary to organisational discipline” were proven beyond doubt.
