Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has taken an initiative to modernise Sayedabad Bus Terminal in line with the prime minister’s directives to reduce traffic congestion and bring discipline to the capital’s transport system.
The move aims to provide modern facilities for passengers, including those travelling on air-conditioned (AC) buses.
A new terminal layout and modernisation plan has been prepared to address traffic congestion caused by AC bus counters currently operating at different locations and along roads.
The design was finalised after detailed discussions with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association.
A meeting on “Sayedabad AC Bus Terminal Management” was held at Nagar Bhaban, chaired by DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Khaybar Rahman, Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman, DMP Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman and Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association Secretary General Md Saiful Alam, among others, attended the meeting.
Under the approved plan, additional space has been allocated at Sayedabad for AC bus services, passenger boarding and alighting areas and overall terminal management.
The DSCC administrator directed officials to implement the changes as soon as possible.
DSCC Chief Engineer said the standard tender process would take considerable time, and proposed that the Bus Owners’ Association prepare and submit a short-term implementation plan to speed up the work.
The meeting also approved several infrastructure measures to improve passenger services at the terminal.
An under-construction building at the old motor garage inside the terminal will be expanded and converted into a dedicated space for AC bus counters.
The entrance to the AC bus counters will be widened, while a parking shed and dedicated walkways will be constructed to ensure smoother passenger movement.
A new counter shed similar to the existing Khulna Divisional Counter Shed will be built on the southern side of the terminal.
Authorities will also take immediate measures to prevent rainwater leakage into counter sheds during the monsoon.
The terminal’s internal drainage and sewerage systems will be upgraded, and additional passenger benches will be installed to provide better waiting facilities.
