A 12-year-old domestic worker, identified as Maria Akter, was found dead in a house in Dhanmondi on Saturday. She was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 4:30pm in critical condition, where doctors declared her dead.
House owner Nasrin Sultana told reporters that Maria had been working at her residence at Road 9/1, House 36 in Dhanmondi for the past three months.
On Saturday afternoon, she went to the market, leaving Maria at home. Upon returning around 3pm, she knocked on the door but received no response.
Using a spare key, she entered the house and found Maria hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf wrapped around her neck. She immediately brought the child down and first took her to Bangladesh Medical, and later to Dhaka Medical, where doctors confirmed her death.
Nasrin claimed she had no knowledge of what might have led the girl to such an act.
Maria, daughter of Masud Islam from Khalsha village under Tarail upazila in Kishoreganj, had been living with her grandmother Bokul Begum in the Rayerbazar area. Bokul said she learned about the incident from the house owner and later found Maria’s body at Dhaka Medical.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death, saying marks were found on Maria’s neck. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Dhanmondi police have been informed for further investigation.
