New Market Police Station recovered the hanging body of a domestic worker, identified as Mst Ratna Akter, from a residence in the capital’s Elephant Road area.
She was found unconscious on Saturday afternoon and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the duty doctor declared her dead.
Md Faruk, inspector and in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the matter, saying, “The body has been kept at the Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy. The relevant police station has been informed.”
According to the family, Ratna hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her room with a scarf around her neck at around 11:00 am on Saturday. After receiving the information, police went to the scene, recovered her unconscious and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. She was later declared dead by a doctor.
The deceased, Ratna Akter, was the daughter of Md Dulal Mia, a resident of Sylhet district. She had been brought to work as a domestic worker at the home of Shahjahan, a resident of the ninth floor of a building in Elephant Road, about two and a half months ago.
