A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed a youth on a five-day remand in connection with a case filed over the assault of a Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital doctor.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order on Tuesday following a petition filed by the investigation officer of the case.
The accused has been identified as Jiban alias Adil, 22. Earlier, the investigation officer, Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Atiquzzaman, produced the accused before the court and sought a 10-day remand. Following a hearing, the court granted a five-day remand.
During the hearing, the defence lawyer filed a petition seeking cancellation of the remand, which was opposed by the prosecution. The court passed the remand order after hearing both sides.
According to the case details, on 17 August at around 10:45pm, Dr Md Asadur Rahman – professor and head of the ear, nose, throat (ENT) and Head-Neck Surgery Department at DMC Hospital – was intercepted by Jiban and five to six unidentified individuals as he was about to board a CNG-run auto-rickshaw after seeing patients at Popular Diagnostic Centre in Shantinagar.
When the doctor asked why they were blocking his way, the accused forcibly dragged him out of the vehicle and beat him repeatedly. Dr Rahman suffered severe, bloody wounds to his right eye, both lips, and various other parts of his body.
Hearing the physician’s screams, pedestrians rushed to the scene and caught Jiban, while the other suspects managed to flee. Police were informed and subsequently took the accused into custody from the scene.
On 18 August, the doctor filed a case as the complainant with Paltan Model Police Station. In the remand application, the investigation officer said the accused are members of an organised crime gang.
The officer added that intensive interrogation under remand is necessary to determine the motive behind the assault on the doctor, identify and arrest the absconding suspects, and investigate whether the accused is linked to any other criminal syndicates.
