Daffodil International University (DIU) has launched a modern Smart Biogas Plant on Monday as part of its commitment to sustainable energy, environmental protection, and the development of a carbon-neutral campus at its Daffodil Smart City campus in Birulia, Savar.
The plant was inaugurated through the ceremonial ignition of the biogas burner, reads a press release.
The inauguration was conducted by Md Sabur Khan. The event was attended by distinguished agricultural scientist, project convener, and Head of the Department of Agricultural Science MA Rahim, who received the Independence Award 2026, and Fizar Ahmed, director of the Embedded System Research Center, along with researchers, faculty members, officials, and students involved in the project.
Speakers at the event commended the collective efforts of researchers, teachers, officials, and students for successfully implementing the initiative, highlighting the importance of sustainable energy and research-driven innovation in higher education institutions.
Rahim said, “This is not just an infrastructure project; it represents a symbol of a greener and more sustainable future. DIU’s initiative demonstrates how higher education institutions can play a significant role in renewable energy adoption, energy self-sufficiency, and environmental sustainability.”
The Smart Biogas Plant was designed and implemented under the leadership of Fizar Ahmed with support from the Planning and Development Department.
The plant can generate approximately 20 to 30 kilowatt-hours of electricity daily by converting organic waste into clean and usable energy.
The initiative is expected to improve waste management practices on campus while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Fizar said, “This plant will serve as a living laboratory for students and researchers. Integrated embedded sensors and automated monitoring systems have been incorporated to make the biogas production process more efficient, intelligent, and technology-driven.”
University authorities said the Smart Biogas Plant marks an important milestone in the institution’s broader green development strategy. In the future, Daffodil Smart City plans to establish an integrated smart waste management system to further advance its goal of becoming a fully carbon-neutral campus.
The university said the initiative is expected to serve as a model for higher education institutions across Bangladesh in promoting renewable energy, eco-friendly campus development, and research-based innovation.
