Bangladesh and Japan have signed an agreement on the transfer of defence equipment and technology, aimed at ensuring strict control over items exchanged between the two countries.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday by SM Kamrul Hassan, Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division under the Chief Adviser’s Office, and Saida Shinichi on behalf of their respective governments.
Officials said the agreement came into force on 3 February.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the pact establishes a legal framework governing the handling of defence equipment and technology to be transferred between the two governments for jointly determined projects, including those contributing to international peace and security.
The agreement sets out procedures for approving and verifying each transfer and lays down basic rules on the proper use of defence equipment and technology.
Japan said the framework would ensure appropriate control over transferred items, particularly in preventing unauthorised third-party transfers or use beyond agreed purposes.
The Japanese side said the agreement is expected to deepen cooperation with Bangladesh in defence equipment and technology while supporting the maintenance and advancement of Japan’s defence production and technological base, contributing to the country’s security.
