Barcelona have stepped up their pursuit of Julian Alvarez after sporting director Deco travelled to Madrid for talks over a possible move for the Atletico Madrid forward.
According to Spanish reports, Deco and his close technical adviser Joao Amaral travelled to the Spanish capital to accelerate negotiations. The pair are expected to meet Alvarez’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo, in the coming hours.
Barcelona identified the Argentina international as their priority attacking target despite already adding younger forwards to their squad during the summer transfer window.
The Catalan club began exploring a move for Alvarez earlier in the window, but Atletico Madrid have maintained their stance that they do not want to sell the 26-year-old striker.
Reports suggest Alvarez remains interested in changing clubs, a position Barcelona believe could help negotiations if discussions progress.
Barcelona, however, do not intend to exceed their valuation of the player and remain unwilling to pay what they consider an excessive transfer fee.
Alvarez remains under contract with Atletico until 2030, leaving the Madrid club in a strong negotiating position. Even so, Barcelona continue to believe a deal remains possible if the player pushes for a move.
Head coach Hansi Flick reportedly views Alvarez as the final piece needed to complete his attacking options for the new season.
Barcelona’s optimism also comes from comments Alvarez made during the World Cup, when he reportedly expressed an interest in changing clubs.
The Argentine joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in August 2024. Since arriving in the Spanish capital, he has scored 49 goals and provided 17 assists in 106 appearances across all competitions.
Barcelona now hope Deco’s visit to Madrid will move negotiations forward as they continue their search for a marquee striker before the transfer window closes.
