Death toll rises to four in Rangpur ‘toxic liquor’ incident

The death toll from drinking “toxic liquor” in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur has reached four. The fourth victim, Ershad Mia, 40, from the Buzruk Jhalai Pakarmatha area, died on Monday night.

Earlier on Monday, three people died after taking toxic liquor.

Locals said a number of people consumed the liquor at Balarhat Bazar on Sunday night and fell sick after returning home. Two of them died early Monday, while another brought to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital, died later that morning.

Confirming the death, Mithapukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ershad Ahmed said Ershad died on Monday night at the same hospital. Following the incident, Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Parvez visited the area.

An investigation is underway, and legal action will be taken against those responsible, the OC added.
