The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has seized illegal cigarettes and banned import vape devices worth approximately Tk1 crore in separate operations at Dhaka and Chattogram airports, officials said on Thursday.
Based on a tip, CIID teams searched baggage of passengers arriving on flight BG-148 from Dubai at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and on flight G-9526 from Sharjah at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram.
A total of 644 cartons of illegal cigarettes, cleverly concealed, were seized, valued at Tk91,87,000, according to a CIID press release.
Meanwhile, the CIID’s Airfreight Circle in Dhaka seized 20 cartons of goods from the Foreign Post Sorting Office. Physical examination revealed 5,550 pieces of Voltbar Switch Vape, which are prohibited for import, with an estimated market value of approximately Tk72,15,000.
The seized cigarettes have been deposited with the relevant Customs House for legal action, while a report is being sent to Customs House in Chattogram regarding the banned vape devices.
