Chittagong University (CU) has cancelled all scheduled exams on Sunday (31 August) following a violent clash between students and local residents of Haathazari. The incident left over 60 people injured. The university’s administration took immediate action to ensure student safety and announced the suspension of all examinations on Sunday due to the ongoing unrest.
In response to the severity of the situation and to ensure the safety of students, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamal Uddin announced the cancellation of all exams scheduled for Sunday. He said, “Due to the injuries and the disruption caused by the ongoing clashes, all exams for today have been called off.”
The incident, which occurred late on Saturday night, began when a female student was assaulted by a building caretaker while attempting to enter her apartment. The situation quickly escalated when students nearby confronted the caretaker, leading local residents to throw bricks at the students. This sparked a full-scale conflict between the two groups, causing chaos near the university’s Second Gate.
The violence intensified with local residents attacking students well into the early hours of Sunday, using loudspeakers to call for further aggression. Many students suffered serious injuries, prompting CU Medical Center staff to provide emergency treatment. Some were transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for more advanced care.
Despite the police’s initial efforts to control the situation, it was only when the army arrived at around 3:20am on Sunday that order was restored.
