A series of controversy began with Bangladesh cricket facing fresh tension after Mustafizur Rahman was removed from the Indian Premier League. Soon after, the Bangladesh Cricket Board decided that the national team would not travel to India for next month’s World Cup. The decision quickly became a major talking point.
As the debate grew, former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal spoke to the media on Thursday. He later spoke again at the Mirpur City Club ground during the trophy and jersey unveiling of the Zia Inter University Cricket Tournament.
Tamim called Mustafizur’s removal from the IPL “unfortunate”. He said such issues are complex and should not be handled in haste. He added that many problems can be solved through discussion. Tamim stressed that decisions should be taken by thinking about Bangladesh’s future and its place in world cricket.
He also spoke about the board’s role. Tamim said the Bangladesh Cricket Board is an “independent body”. He accepted that the government is a major stakeholder but said the board must still be able to take its own decisions. He added that public opinion will always differ and large institutions cannot run by trying to satisfy everyone.
Soon after these comments spread, Bangladesh Cricket Board director and finance committee chairman M Nazmul Islam reacted on social media. He shared a photo card of Tamim’s remarks on Facebook and referred to him as an “Indian agent”. He claimed that another such figure had appeared before the public.
The post remained online for several hours and spread fast. It drew strong criticism from fans, journalists and the cricket community. Later that night, Nazmul Islam deleted the post without any explanation.
The matter did not stop there. Current national team players came forward and spoke openly.
Spinner Taijul Islam said he was “shocked” by the comment. He said such language from a board director is unacceptable and harms Bangladesh’s cricket culture. He also called for accountability from a responsible position.
Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed shared a similar view. He wrote that cricket is the pride of Bangladesh and pointed to Tamim’s contribution to the country. Taskin said such comments do not serve Bangladesh cricket and hoped the issue would be handled responsibly.
The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh later released an official statement. CWAB said it was “hurt and ashamed” by the remark made by a board official. The association said the comment was insulting, not just to Tamim Iqbal but to the entire cricket community.
CWAB demanded a public apology and accountability. It said remarks like these raise serious questions about conduct and professionalism. The association confirmed it had sent a formal protest letter to the BCB president and asked for quick action.
What began as a debate over cricket decisions has now turned into a wider issue of respect and responsibility. With players and the welfare body taking clear positions, attention is now on how the Bangladesh Cricket Board responds to the growing calls for action.
