A Dhaka court on Sunday asked the authorities to submit the investigation report on 13 January in the case concerning the 1996 death of actor Salman Shah.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order.
Mohammad Alamgir Kumkum, the actor’s maternal uncle, filed a case against 11 people with Ramna Police Station on 20 October.
Earlier, Judge Jannatul Ibne Haque of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-6 accepted a revision petition and directed to file a murder case..
The accused include Salman’s wife Samira Haque, her mother Latifa Haque Lucy, businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, and individuals identified as Don, Devid, Zaved, Faruk, Rubi, Abdus Sattar, Saju and Rizvi Ahmed alias Farhad.
The court also instructed immigration authorities to take measures to prevent the accused from fleeing the country.
According to the case documents, Salman Shah was found dead at his Eskaton flat on 6 September 1996. His father, Kamaruddin Chowdhury, later filed an unnatural death case.
On 24 July 1997, a petition was filed claiming that Salman Shah had been murdered, prompting the court to assign the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate.
On 3 November 1997, CID submitted its final report, stating that Salman Shah had died by suicide. Rejecting the report, Kamaruddin Chowdhury filed a revision petition, after which the case was sent to the judicial department for further investigation.
The court again referred the case for judicial investigation on 19 May 2003.
On 3 August 2014, Metropolitan Magistrate Emdadul Haque submitted a judicial statement concluding it was a suicide case.
On 10 February 2015, Salman’s mother, Nila Chowdhury, filed a naraji petition. The case was later transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
On 25 February 2020, PBI Inspector Sirajul Islam submitted the investigation report.
On 31 October 2021, the court disposed of the case after accepting the report.
On 12 June 2022, another revision petition was filed with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court, again asserting that Salman Shah had been murdered.
