A court has ordered the freezing of eight bank accounts belonging to former Bhola-2 MP Ali Azam Mukul and his wife, Jahanara Yasmin, in a case regarding illegal wealth accumulation and money laundering.
Five accounts are in Mukul’s name, while three belong to his wife.
Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court issued the order following petitions filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Bench assistant Md Riaz Hossain confirmed the development.
According to the ACC, Mukul’s five accounts hold a total of Tk1.39 crore, while his wife’s three accounts contain Tk50.75 lakh. The petitions were submitted separately by ACC Assistant Director and the investigating officer of the case Pias Pal.
The commission stated that the couple was attempting to transfer, shift, or change ownership of their immovable assets. “To ensure a proper investigation, it is necessary to freeze the assets registered under their names,” the petition said.
Earlier, on 6 October last year, the ACC filed two separate cases against Mukul and his wife for illegal wealth accumulation and money laundering.
