A container loaded with mobile, computer and motorcycle accessories caught fire at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chattogram port at around 8:00pm on October 1.
Confirming the matter, Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Md Omar Faruk told TIMES that smoke was first noticed coming from a 40-foot container at the NCT Handover Bay area.
On being alerted, the Fire Service was called in immediately. The container was then removed from its slot, and the seal was opened in presence of representatives from the Port’s Transport Department, Security Division, CDDL, and security forces.
According to the Port’s Transport Department, three cartons inside the container were damaged by smoke and handed over to the Fire Service for inspection. The remaining cargo was promptly shifted to another location to prevent further damage.
Officials of Chattogram Port Authority, customs, and other agencies were present at the scene. Authorities confirmed that the timely response helped avert a major disaster.
