A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the clash between police and madrasa students at the Brahmanbaria police lines during a cultural programme organised by the district police.
The committee will look into what triggered the confrontation, the sequence of events and the roles of those involved, including Chattogram Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdul Quddus Chowdhury.
The committee will investigate the reason behind the clash, how the incident unfolded, and the roles of those involved.
Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rafiqul Islam confirmed the formation of the committee to TIMES of Bangladesh on Saturday night.
The committee members are Additional IGP Rafiqul Islam, Additional DIG (Crime) of Chattogram Range Mohammad Nazmul Hasan and Superintendent of Police, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Brahmanbaria district Sachin Chakma
At least 30 people, including seven police personnel, were injured in the clash at the police lines on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred during a cultural programme organised by the district police as part of an anti-drug campaign. DIG Abdul Quddus Chowdhury attended the programme.
According to witnesses and police sources, the confrontation began around 11:30pm when several students of nearby Jamia Darul Arkam Al-Islamia Madrasa went to the police lines and asked the organisers to lower the volume, saying they had an examination the next morning.
The madrasa was founded by Hefazat-e-Islam Secretary General Maulana Sajidur Rahman.
The students said the organisers initially lowered the volume but later increased it, leading to an argument with police.
Police, however, alleged that the situation escalated after some students entered the police lines and vandalised the programme venue.
Police then used batons to disperse them, while the students allegedly threw bricks and stones at the officers.
The newly formed committee will now examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and submit its findings to the authorities.
