The Automobile Association of Bangladesh (AAB) has announced plans to launch a Road Accident Support Centre to provide medical, legal, psychological and financial assistance to road accident victims and their families.

The initiative was announced on Thursday at an awareness programme held at the organisation’s headquarters in Dhaka’s Moghbazar to mark National Road Safety Day 2026.

The centre will offer six types of assistance, including counselling, medical guidance, legal advice, insurance claim support, accident-related information and financial aid based on individual needs.

According to AAB, immediate first aid, notifying the national emergency helpline 999 and safely transporting injured people to the nearest hospital are crucial after an accident. However, victims and their families often require support beyond emergency treatment.

Under the initiative, professional counsellors will provide psychological support, while lawyers will offer legal advice and representation. The centre will also assist victims with insurance claims and provide financial support where necessary.

AAB President Barrister Azmalul Hossain KC attended the programme as chief guest, while Chief Executive Officer Major General (Retd) Saidul Islam was present as special guest.

The organisation observed National Road Safety Day under the theme ‘Safe Road, Prosperous Country – Bangladesh First’ and conducted an ‘AAB Zero Contact Campaign’ with the slogan ‘I will obey the law, I will return home safely’.

As part of its nationwide awareness activities, AAB organised a road safety rally from its headquarters and distributed leaflets and road safety ‘Golden Rules’ cards developed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

The materials were distributed among bus drivers, ride-sharing drivers, private car drivers, rickshaw pullers and compressed natural gas-powered auto-rickshaw drivers.

AAB road safety ambassadors also conducted awareness campaigns in Chattogram, Sylhet and Cumilla.

The organisation extended its campaign to schools, holding nine awareness programmes involving 1,683 students from Classes 1 to 5.

Speakers at the programme said road accidents could be significantly reduced through compliance with traffic rules, the use of helmets and seatbelts and maintaining safe driving speeds.

They stressed the need for coordinated efforts by the government, organisations and citizens to improve road safety, alongside sustained support for accident victims and their families.
