The Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a massive haul of banned polythene during a special operation in the Lalbagh area of the capital on Tuesday, reads a press release.
Acting on secret information, a team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted the drive in the area adjacent to Lohar Bridge on the banks of the Buriganga River. The operation lasted from 4am to 8am on Tuesday.
During the raid, officers searched suspicious trucks and recovered approximately 24,000 kg of banned polythene. The estimated market value of the seized goods is Tk4.08 crore.
The confiscated polythene was subsequently handed over to the Department of Environment, Narayanganj, for destruction.
Meanwhile, the truck drivers and helpers were released along with their vehicles after providing a written undertaking.
A Coast Guard official stated that such operations would continue in the future to ensure environmental protection.
