A 12-year-old boy reportedly died after being beaten by his mother in Shibganj Gangarampur village of Chapainawabganj on Friday morning.

The deceased, Ashik, was the son of Suman Ali and Alia Begum. The couple had two children.

Eyewitnesses said Alia Begum struck Ashik with blows and kicks while trying to discipline him. While doing that she hit him in a sensitive area, which led to his death at the scene.

Union Chairman Mahmudur Haidari told Times of Bangladesh that Suman Ali works as a day labourer in Dhaka, while Alia manages the household. “She was disciplining her son in the morning when the incident occurred,” he said.

However, Ashik’s cousin Dulal Ali claimed the boy had been ill prior to the incident and suggested his death may have been due to natural causes.

Shibganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Shakil Hasan confirmed the body had been recovered and said the cause of death is yet to be determined.

“A post-mortem will clarify the circumstances. Legal action will follow if a written complaint is filed,” he added.
