A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader was killed on Monday in a clash between two rival factions in Barishal’s Babuganj, reportedly sparked by the distribution of sweets after Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.
The deceased, Rabiul Islam, 22, was the vice-president of the Jahangirnagar Union unit of JCD. The clash erupted around 6:30pm at Agarpur Bazar under Jahangirnagar Union.
Rabiul was rushed to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Union Parishad Chairman Kamrul Ahsan Khan said, “The clash erupted over the distribution of sweets following the verdict against the deposed prime minister. Several others were also injured in the incident.”
Babuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Palash Sarkar said tensions escalated when a group of JCD activists distributed sweets in reaction to the court ruling.
He said the dispute between the two groups quickly turned violent. The injured were taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Police said additional forces have been deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.
