Chris Evans has warned fans that Captain America will face a “brutal” journey in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, reports The Wrap.
Speaking at Fan Expo Boston, Evans reflected on working with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who are returning to direct the new Avengers film.
According to Evans, the brothers have always enjoyed putting Steve Rogers through physically demanding battles to highlight his resilience as a hero.
“The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favourite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him,” Evans said.
“To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up,” he added.
Evans also revealed the extraordinary measures Marvel took to keep his return to the film secret.
The actor said his character was referred to as “Luke Cage” throughout the production to prevent details about his involvement from leaking.
“Within the script, my character was called Luke Cage just in case things leaked. On the call sheets, I was called Luke Cage.
Even on set, they’d say, ‘Luke Cage is travelling.’ It was such a locked-down thing,” Evans said.
Avengers: Doomsday will mark Evans’ return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers.
The character was last seen in Avengers: Endgame (2019), when he returned the Infinity Stones and chose to remain in the past with Peggy Carter.
Evans briefly returned to the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), but played Johnny Storm, the character he portrayed in Fox’s Fantastic Four films in the 2000s.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theatres on 18 December.
