China on Monday welcomed an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the Middle East war and praised Pakistan for its mediation efforts.
The United States and Iran said they had reached a deal to end hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, and to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. However, they gave limited details on the key issue of Iran’s nuclear programme.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a news briefing that China “welcomes the agreement” and appreciates Pakistan’s mediation role. He added that Beijing hopes the deal will be signed as scheduled.
Lin also said China hopes safe and free passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be restored as soon as possible.
