An eight-year-old child, Sohan Sheikh, was killed after being run over by a truck while visiting his aunt’s house in Uttara of the capital.
His mother, elder brother and grandmother were injured in the same incident.
The accident occurred at around 6am on Saturday under the flyover adjacent to the BNS Center in Uttara.
Sohan and his mother, Tahurunnessa, 38, were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared the child dead at around 11am.
Tahurunnessa is currently undergoing treatment in the emergency department. Sohan’s grandmother Abejan Begum, 65 and elder brother Mahmudul Hasan Rohan, 13 have been admitted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
Speaking at the hospital, the victim’s aunt Runa Begum said their home is in Pulghat village of Bagerhat Sadar upazila.
She said her mother, sister and two nephews came from the village to visit her residence in Turag Nayanagar on Monday.
On Saturday morning, they were returning to their village and waiting for a vehicle under the flyover opposite the Uttara BNS Centre when a truck and a bus were racing side by side, the truck lost control and ran them over, leaving all four critically injured.
Family members first took the victims to Uttara Kuwait Maitree Hospital, from where they were shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).
Later, Sohan and his mother were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the child was declared dead.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed the death and said the child’s body had been kept at the emergency department morgue.
The incident is being investigated by Uttara East Police Station.
