Railway authorities have formed a four-member investigation committee after a fire broke out on the Dhaka-bound intercity Chattala Express near Faujdarhat in Sitakunda on Thursday morning.
Divisional Railway Manager Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan said the committee was constituted immediately after the incident to determine the cause of the fire.
Headed by the Divisional Transport Officer (DTO), the committee has been asked to submit its findings within a short timeframe.
Initial assessments indicate that the fire may have originated from a mechanical fault, though officials said the exact cause will be confirmed following the investigation.
The incident occurred around 6:45am near the BMA Gate area in Faujdarhat, when flames erupted in the train’s power car while it was in motion.
The fire later spread to an adjacent air-conditioned coach, causing panic among passengers. However, passengers were able to quickly evacuate the train and move to safety, and no casualties were reported.
On information, two units of the Fire Service rushed to the scene and brought the blaze under control.
Rail operation was briefly disrupted but returned to normal shortly after the situation was contained.
