Students left the roads in Dhaka’s Farmgate area after a two-hour blockade demanding justice and road safety reforms, following the death of their classmate, who was run over by a truck near the area two days ago.

The protest started around 11am on Government Science College Road and soon spread to the Farmgate intersection, disrupting traffic on one of the capital’s busiest routes.

They were seen staging a demonstration on the road on Thursday afternoon, chanting various slogans.

On Tuesday, a madrasa student was killed after being run over by a truck on the road from Farmgate towards Satrasta. Following the incident, students began demanding road safety. They had also blocked the same road on Wednesday.

Among the protesters’ demands are regulating traffic movement in the area due to the presence of several educational institutions, and controlling the movement of autorickshaws, which they say cause difficulties for commuters.

The students have also demanded the installation of speed breakers, lamp posts, lane dividers, and traffic islands on the road.
