The cabinet has approved the proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in a special meeting in Parliament.
The meeting took place on Thursday morning at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and other cabinet members attended the session.
After the approval, the finance minister is scheduled to place the budget in Parliament at 3pm, with the Prime Minister expected to join the session.
The proposed budget, the first under the current government, is worth Tk9.38 lakh crore, the largest in the country’s history.
According to the proposal, the National Board of Revenue and other sources are expected to collect Tk6.95 lakh crore in revenue.
The budget shows a gap of Tk2.43 lakh crore between income and expenditure. To finance this deficit, the government plans to raise funds from both domestic and external sources.
External loans and grants are projected at Tk1.16 lakh crore, while Tk1.27 lakh crore will come from domestic sources. Of this, Tk1.12 lakh crore will be borrowed from the banking system and Tk15,000 crore from savings instruments and other sources.
The budget is also the 55th national budget of Bangladesh and the first budget of Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury in the current government’s tenure.
The government has also set the Annual Development Programme (ADP) at around Tk3 lakh crore for the next fiscal year. Of this, Tk1.99 lakh crore will come from government funding, while Tk1.10 lakh crore will be financed through foreign assistance.
The budget will come into effect from 1 July after presidential assent, in line with the constitutional process.
