Amid forecasts of heavy rainfall across various regions across the country, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has instructed all its officers and employees not to leave their workplaces.
In an emergency circular issued on Thursday, the board said that heavy rain is likely to continue along coastal areas until Monday, while Rangpur and Sylhet divisions may see heavy rainfall until Tuesday. Other parts of the country are expected to experience light to moderate rain over the next five days.
Given the situation, the BWDB has asked staff in the northern, northeastern, Rangpur, Sylhet and coastal belt areas to stay at their stations, identify weak points in embankments and take prompt measures to secure them, while remaining vigilant about possible erosion in other areas. Officials have been instructed to stockpile emergency supplies such as geo-textile bags and to move quickly to affected areas to take necessary actions if any emergency arises.
They have also been directed to coordinate closely with local or district administrations to manage any situation that develops, and to keep higher authorities updated on the evolving circumstances.
In addition, officers and employees working in other regions of the country have been advised to remain alert.
According to the regular weather bulletin, from 6 pm on Thursday for the following 24 hours, most areas of Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions and many places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions are likely to see temporary gusty winds with light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Moderately heavy to heavy rain may also occur at isolated places across the country. The day and night temperatures may fall slightly nationwide.
Met office has indicated that this trend of rainfall may continue for at least five days.
