Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and VisionSpring Bangladesh have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide essential eye care services to BRTC drivers, officers, and employees.
The agreement, which aims to improve road safety through better vision care, was signed on Wednesday at a ceremony held in the conference room of Paribahan Bhaban in Motijheel, Dhaka.
The MoU was signed by Abdul Latif Mollah, Chairman of BRTC, and Misha Mahjabeen, Country Director of VisionSpring Bangladesh, on behalf of their respective organisations.
Under the terms of the agreement, VisionSpring Bangladesh will conduct eye examinations for approximately 4,000 BRTC personnel. A registration fee of BDT 50 will be charged per person for the eye screening.
Those identified as needing visual assistance will be provided with reading glasses or prescription spectacles. The eye screening programme is set to begin on February 1, 2026, and will run until April 30, 2027. While initially focused on Dhaka, the initiative will expand to BRTC depots and units nationwide.
BRTC Chairman Abdul Latif Mollah emphasised the importance of the initiative for road safety. He noted that regular eye exams for drivers both in and outside Dhaka would help reduce accidents caused by vision-related issues.
Misha Mahjabeen, Country Director of VisionSpring Bangladesh, highlighted the organisation’s successful track record, stating that VisionSpring had already conducted eye screenings for nearly 500,000 workers across various workplaces in Bangladesh.
She noted that more than 30 per cent of those screened required and received spectacles. Since its founding in 2001, VisionSpring has been providing affordable eyewear to low-income communities, with plans to expand these essential services further.
The signing ceremony was attended by several senior BRTC officials, including Dr Anupam Saha, Director (Finance & Accounts), Md Rahenul Islam, Director (Administration & Operations), and Colonel Kazi Ayub Ali, Director (Technical & Training). General Managers and Deputy General Managers from various departments, as well as representatives from VisionSpring Bangladesh, were also present.
