Neymar stands at the centre of Brazil’s biggest football debate after a Quaest poll, conducted across 120 municipalities between April 10–13, revealed a near-even split on his national team call-up ahead of the World Cup squad announcement on May 18.

The numbers tell a brutal story. Forty-seven percent back him, forty-five percent reject him. That gap sits inside a two-point margin of error. In plain terms, Brazil cannot make up its mind.

The poll, reported by Globo.com, exposes a country wrestling with its past and future at the same time. Neymar still carries the aura of a match-winner, but he also drags the weight of injuries, inconsistency and expectation.

He has made his position clear. He wants in. He has said he aims to return and play at the World Cup, while stressing the decision does not sit with him. That sounds respectful, but it also keeps the door firmly open.

The mood has barely shifted over time. Back in October 2023, forty-eight percent supported his inclusion and thirty-nine percent opposed it. The support holds steady, but the resistance has grown louder.

Regional splits sharpen the picture. The Northeast leads support at forty-nine percent, while the Southeast follows closely.

The South pushes back hardest. Fifty-three percent there oppose his selection, and only forty percent back him. That is not hesitation; that is rejection.

Eight percent of respondents refused to pick a side. Even that matters. Indifference around Neymar once felt impossible in Brazil.

This debate cuts deeper than one player. It asks whether Brazil still trusts individual brilliance or now demands collective certainty.
