Bangladesh Power Management Institute (BPMI) has opened a renewable energy training hub in Purbachal to tackle the country’s shortage of skilled workers as it pushes to raise clean power to 30 per cent of the energy mix by 2040.
The facility, set up with support from German Development Cooperation under the Skills Development for Sustainable Energy Solutions project implemented by GIZ, will train technicians in solar and wind energy, according to a press release.
Bangladesh is moving to meet targets under the Renewable Energy Policy 2025 and the Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), but a lack of trained manpower has slowed progress.
The new hub includes labs for renewable energy simulation and solar photovoltaic systems, along with a weather station to assess wind resources. Training courses have been updated to focus on solar modelling and wind project feasibility.
The programme has already trained 52 instructors through Training of Trainers courses to ensure skills are passed on and aligned with industry needs.
“Upgraded resources will allow BPMI to play a more effective role in supporting the country’s transition towards sustainable energy,” said BPMI Rector Md Sobur Hossain, who chaired the event.
“A sustainable energy transition is not just about technology, it is about people,” said German Embassy Head of Development Cooperation Ulrich Kleppmann.
“By investing in industry-relevant skills, particularly for women and young professionals, the partnership supports an inclusive and resilient transition,” he added.
Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority Chairman Muzaffar Ahmed attended the event as chief guest.
The initiative is part of wider Bangladesh-Germany cooperation to build skills, speed up renewable adoption and strengthen energy security.
