Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, famously known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, passed away on Monday, at his Mumbai residence.
He was 89.
Indian media outlets, including Filmfare, confirmed the actor’s death. Dharmendra’s passing marks the end of a luminous six-decade chapter in Bollywood history.
He had been hospitalised a few weeks ago due to complications related to breathlessness. Following treatment, he had returned home and resumed his normal routine. His family had previously expressed frustration over circulating false rumours about his health.
On Monday, an ambulance was seen outside his Mumbai home, while police set up barricades nearly 50 metres away and heightened security at the site. His daughter, Esha Deol, and several other celebrities visited the residence.
The actor was preparing to celebrate his 90th birthday on 8 December, with his wife, Hema Malini, reportedly organising family festivities. Those plans have now been halted following his death.
Dharmendra leaves behind a legendary legacy in Indian cinema, remembered for his charismatic screen presence, iconic action roles, and enduring influence on generations of actors and fans alike.
